Description of the Galapagos sea lion

This species of sea lion is somewhat smaller than the Galapagos fur seal, with males reaching lengths of up to 5.90 feet and weights of 550 pounds, while females are smaller, reaching about 3.30 feet and weights of 220 pounds. Galapagos sea lions have dark brown fur and a shorter coat than Galapagos fur seals. They are also very agile on land and in the water, with powerful flippers that allow them to swim at speeds of up to 25 mph and dive to depths of over 650 feet to search for food. The Galapagos sea lion is very social and can form groups of several hundred individuals. It is also very curious and can often approach humans to observe them.

When to see them?

Galapagos sea lions are present all year round on the Galapagos Islands. However, there can be seasonal differences in their behavior and appearance, and certain times of the year can offer unique viewing opportunities. For example: - Between June and August: This is the dry season on the Galapagos Islands, with cooler temperatures and stronger winds. This is also the breeding season for sea lions, so it is possible to see males fighting for territory, as well as newly born sea lion pups. - Between December and January: This is the hot and humid season on the Galapagos Islands, with higher temperatures and more rainfall. This is also the time when sea lions shed their coats, so it is possible to see sea lions with loose tufts of hair on their bodies.

Where to observe them?

Galapagos sea lions can be seen on several islands of the archipelago, including: - Española Island: Española Island is one of the best places to see Galapagos sea lions, especially on Gardner Bay Beach, where sea lions can be seen lounging on the sand and swimming in the crystal-clear water. - Santa Fe Island: Santa Fe Island is known to be home to a large population of Galapagos sea lions, which can be seen on the island's white sand beach as well as in the surrounding waters. - San Cristobal Island: San Cristobal Island is the second largest island in the archipelago and is also home to a large population of Galapagos sea lions. They can be observed on the beach of La Loberia and in the surrounding bays. - Genovesa Island: Genovesa Island is a popular destination for sea lion watching tours, especially at Darwin Bay Beach where sea lions can be seen lounging on the sand and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.
